SURPRISE IN STEEPLES.
There was a surprise in the Hunters' Steeplechase when Hauwai, trained at Awapuni by L. Knapp, scored in a good finish front the well-supported Valpeen. In was only when the run down the hill to the straight was commenced the last time that Hauwai appeared on the scene, but lie sustained a long run to finish wide out and scored by a couple of lengths. The disappointment of the race was Count Lcndrofl', who made a couple of faulty jumps when in the lead with Valpeen for a round. Over the last circuit he drifted badly and eventually only beat one horse Bamba home. Zane Grey ran a good race, but Creina's King tired in the straight after being close up when the hill was completed the last time.
