OTAHUHU BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The Otahuhu Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor, Mr. H. T. Clements, presiding.' Supplementary Water Supply. — The Manukau County Council reported that it had decided to grant the request from the borough council to link up with the county water sup-ply as a standby. The cost will he 1/3 per 1000 gallons, the borough to instal a meter. Relief Labour.—The Labour Department refused the council's request to make use of relief labour in the upkeep of the Otahuhu Croquet Club grounds, stating that as these grounds were not public property relief labour was not available. Duke Memorial.—MrV W'. 'Murdoch, headmaster of the primary school, wrote that the Duke Memorial placed in the school grounds was in. urgent need of cleaning and relettering. The matter was referred to the works committee. Portage Road. —The manager of the city abattoirs wrote complaining about the bad condition of the west end of Portage Road and pointed out that drovers were finding it difficult to drive stock there. The Passenger Transport Company also lodged a complaint and invited councillors to take a bus ride and experience the discomfort of passengers. Over 40 buses passed over this road every'day. It was stated the work was now. in. hand, and there would be no further need for complaint. Boot Repairing.—-It was reported that the boot repairing depot for relief workers was not being jiatronised by them. Only 60 pairs of boots had been repaired since June 24 and last week.five pairs had been sent in. The opinion was expressed that the costing was too high and that there was no saving to the relief worker. Costs will be revised, and if the depot, is not better patronised it will be closed. Water Supply.—ln reply to a question the Mayor said the council's policy would be framed when they knew what was going to happen to the Waikato scheme.. They expected some finality in a- few weeks. Their arrangement "with the Manukau County Council would enable them to carry on in the meantime. Health Inspection.—The health inspector reported that a relief worker was living iu a building in Ngaio Street, which, was devoid of sanitary conveniences. This building was State owned, and notice to vacate it had been ignored. The Mayor said it was unfair to allow the State to defy them. They had closed down private properties and the State was not entitled to exemption. There was a certain amount of hardship on the tenant, but the council must enforce its by-laws. It was decided to give 14 days'notice to comply with the by-law.
