HOCKEY.

N.Z. LADIES' TITLE. CHAMPIONS BEATEN BY OTAGO. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) DANNEVIRKE, this day. The semi-final game in the New Zealand ladies' hockey tournament between Eaetern land Otago to decide who should play off with Canterbury in the final to-day was played yesterday afternoon in fine but overcast weather and on a ground still heavy and slippery after Monday s rain. A keenly-contested game resulted in a victory for Otago by 2 goals to 0, a goal being scored in each half. Play was very hard and fast. Otago owed its victory to fine stick work, splendid combination and the great defence of the full-backs. Eastern played doggedly, but was nnable to bring attacks to fruition. Playing with a light breeze in the first speil, Otago was always a little superior and scored about ten minutes after the start from a scramble in front of the net, R. Hunt just tapping the ball in, the Eastern goalie having fallen. Except for rare excursions into Otago territory by Eastern, Otago had the better of the remainder of the spell. Upon resuming Eastern infused more dash into its play, and for some time was very aggressive, but Otago s defence was impenetrable. The score was unchanged until seven minutes from time. Eaetern had been attacking determinedly, when G Vidal and J. Kreaft led a great upfield rush for S. Vidal on the right wing to send the ball from the sideline right across to R. Hunt, on the left flank. Ihe latter sent in a stinging shot high into the net, giving the goalie no chance. H. Johnson, the Otago goalie, played brilliantly, stopping several hot shots. She was carried shoulder-high trom tno field. AUCKLAND STILL WINNING. TWO VICTORIES IN MANAWATU. (By Telegraph.—Special to " Star.") PALMERSTON NORTH, this day.
