MISSIONS TO SEAMEN.
A very enjoyable entertainment was given to tho Japanese cadets of tlie Japanese Government mercantile training ship Shintoku Mara last evening, in the social hall of the Missions to Seamen. The Rev. H. K. Vickery presided. The National Anthem opened ail excellent programme comprising violin solos by Mr. A; W. Jones, Messrs. Trevor and Laurie Hancock in piccolo and xylophone numbers,, tho Mataroa orchestra, the players being Messrs. A. W. Jones, D. Davies, G. Vinscombe and H. French. Choruses were well sung by delegates Toe H, and Scottish dances were, supplied by Misses . Jessie McLauchlan, Dorothy Searle, Doreen Dunn, Jessie Boyd, Mavis Ward, and Master G. Dunn, Piper R. McKay playing for them. Mr. Wynn Grey supplied some good conjuring tricks, which created much amusement? The ladies' committee were responsible for the excellent supper, which brought the gathering to a close. The Epsom branch of the League of Mothers held a meeting last week, the president, Mrs. W. R. Tuck, presiding. Talks on current events were given by Mesdames J. T. F. Mitchell, Traill and Hazard. The speaker for the afternoon was Dr. Elaine Gurr, who gave an instructive lecture on "Ante-natal Care." The thought for tlie month was given by Mrs. Glummer, and a solo was rendered by Mrs. Otter. Afternoon tea was provided by Mesdames Moodie, Buttle, Hill, Wylie, D. McKay and Eliffe. On Monday evening the Grey Lynn W.C.T.U. met in the Great North Road Methodist Hall to enjoy a musical evening, and to meet Miss C. M. McLay, the Dominion organiser. As district president, Mrs. Ivasper presided. The programme included songs by Mrs. Moses. Misses Bray and Edna Gauglian, a,nd Mr. Crocker; elocutionary items, Misses Read, Ina Lee and Dawn Dickinson; violin solos, Mr. Jury; and pianoforte solos by Mrs. Jury and Miss Elsio Laurent. Mrs. Jury and Miss Lovett acted as accompanists. Miss McLay, in her address upon "Wallbuilders," emphasised the necessity for strong protective walls being built up around the young people and children of tho nation, and the' W.C.T.U. was seeking to do this work.
