PAYING SALES TAX.
OBJECTION TO RESTRICTION. "UNNECESSARY INCONVENIENCE."
The action of the collector of sales tax in refusing to accept business firms' cheques or bank drafts in payment of sales tax unless accompanied by a bank guarantee was discussed at the Chamber of Commerce this morning. It was reported that the local (collector of Customs had informed the chamber that the circular in regard to the ; guarantee being necessary had been sent out in error, and he was willing to accept cheques in payment, provided they had been marked by the bank. Mr. Gainor Jackson said that this was still putting business firms to unnecessary inconvenience. Other Government Departments accepted ordinary cheques for payment of income tax, etc., and he thought the same practice should be followed in thi6 instance. Other members contended that . the banks would object to mark cheques without qualification as to when they were intended for presentation. The following motion, moved by Mr. T. A. Low, was approved: "In view of the unnecessary inconvenience caused to the commercial community by the arbitrary decisions of some Government officials, as exemplified by the recent circular issued by the collector of sales tax at Auckland, members be asked to report to their chambers all instances of restrictive methods and undue interference by Government officials; such cases to be referred to the Associated Chambers of Commerce, urging that suitable action be taken."
