"Manchester Guardian" Article
Brings Protest.
GOVERNMENT ACTION.
BERLIN, April 28.
The German Ambassador in London, Herr von Hoeseh, has been instructed "to protest against an article published in tho "Manchester Guardian" alleging that the Chancellor, Herr Hitler, and other members of the German Government were responsible for the Reichstag fire.
Tho German Government describes such a charge against a foreign Government as unprecedented.
The "Guardian" special correspondent, in tho article complained of, quoted a confidential manuscript which, he said, was circulated by Nationalists in Germany alleging that the fire was started by emissaries of the Speaker, Captain Goering.
These emissaries were said to have traversed a subterranean passage connecting tho Speaker's house with the Reichstag, distributed inflammable matter and left a Dutchman named Van der Luebbe with Communist documents in the passage. They were said to have then departed through the passage.
The correspondent attributed ' the action of the Nazis to disappointment at their failure to accomplish drastic economic and social changes owing to their association with the Nationalists, "who, on the slightest sign of bad faith, were rtady to proclaim a military dictatorship.
"Henco the Nazis, in order to gain freedom, determined upon this desperate expedient to secure triumph at the election," the correspondent added.
