MANUFACTURERS.
REVIEW OF YEAR'S WORK.
THE OTTAWA CONFERENCE
The 46th annual report of the Auckland Manufacturers' Association states that 19 new members were elected during the year, and that there was now a total membership of 297. The most important subject during the year was tlie Ottawa Conference. The committee ot tlie association was adverse to any delegates being sent to represent sgecifie interests, but it became evident that action would have to be taken to safeguard manufacturing interests, and it was decided to join with the Southern associations in sending a representative to Ottawa. In connection with bank exchange the committee opposed a high-pegged exchange. The sales tax had caused much concern, but it was realised that it was useless to protest against it. The Australian tariff was sprung at short notice. The Ottawa agreement necessitated a tariff inquiry, and evidence was being obtained for submission to the commission. Reference is made: to the last Auckland Winter Exhibition, and the next one, which will be held in July next, and the association urges _ manufacturers to show the large and varied extent of goods made in the Dominion. At the recent Suva exhibition Auckland manufacturers made a large and comprehensive display, which was very favourably commented upon. . The report states that the Onehunga Water Supply Bill was successfully opposed, and that had it been passed it. would have detrimentally affected manufacturing industries.
