RELIEF IN CITY.
ART UNION PROCEEDS.
ALLOCATION FOR AUCKLAND.
GOVERNOR-GENERAL'S TVST>.
Several important question* • associated with''the relief of unemployment in Auckland, including the. allocation of art union proceeds'and the distribution of donations to the Governor-General's special fund, were discussed with the authorities in Wellington yesterday by the Mayor, Mr. G. W. Hutchison, who returned to Auckland this morning by the Limited express.
Mr. Hutchison stated in an interview that he had made inquiry of Mr. J. S. Jessep, deputy-chairman of the Unemployment Board, as to when he and the Hon. Adam Hamilton, Minister of Employment, would be ..returning to Auckland to give their replies to the requests which had. been placed before them by the deputations they met here some weeks ago. Mr. Jessep replied that the Minister had been indisposed for a fortnight, but it was hoped that the visit could be arranged in the hear future.
The distribution of the funds and goods which ttite public are contributing in response to the appeal of the Gover-nor-General, Lord Bledisloe, was discussed with Mr. Jessep. Mr. Hutchison 'said that, although Ministerial authority was still awaited, it was fairly definite that existing relief organisations, which, in the case of Auckland, would be the Auckland -Metropolitan Unemployment Relief Committee, would.be asked to undertake the distribution of the cash and kind allocations.
' In -connection' with an application he had made some time ago on behalf of the Metropolitan Committee for a share in art union proceeds, the Mayor said he had been advised by the UnderSecretary :of Internal Affairs that £10,000 would be available Out of the Easter art union for allocation for unemployment relief purposes, and that from that sum Auckland' would..receive ite share. "The amount we will receive cannot be stated until "the allocation is fixed by the Minister, but I expect that it will not be less- than the sum we received last year,. £2000," added Mr. Hutchison. "I pointed put to the UnderSecretary that the application was made on behalf of the four cities, and that if the proceeds were to be spread over the whole Dominion our allocation would not be sufficient for our purposes. His reply was that there was quite a good prospect. of further allocations being made out of subsequent art unions in order, .to- meet, the position." •
