BURDEN OF TAXES.
HIGH COST OF EDUCATION,

Education costs are being investigated in many States and in Canada as the burden of taxation threatens in many instances to cause the collapse of the educational system. Forty States out of the 48 have curtailed school terrasAlabama has cut terms 50 per cent, and Arkansas 33' per cent.
In 35 States,, numbers of teachers have been dismissed and pay cuts run as high as 40 per cent. Education costs the United States taxpayer 25 dollars (£5 at par) per capita, while the cost per pupil is 90 dollars (£lB at par). In Canada, the cost per pupil is 66 dollars ( £13 4/ at par).
Chicago's bill for unemployed relief this year will be 80,000,000 dollars (£16,000,000 at par), compared with 45,000,000 (£9,000,000 at par), for 1932.
Cases of rank abuse of charity are constantly being discovered. The Relief Commission has a staff of 2800 social workers and investigators.
Thousands of taxpayers declare that they will refuse to carry a similar burden another year.
