POSITION AT NEW LYNN.
£11,179 OF UNPAID RATES.
I In a review of the finances of New Lynn Borough the Mayor, Mr. George Lawson, who has been returned unopposed, stated to-day that considering the difficult times the rates had come in reasonably well. Fifty-six per cent, amounting to £6504 on the current year's levy of £11,652, had been collected, and 33 'per cent of arrears, amounting to £2907. had been paid. The total of outstanding rates at March 31 last was £11,179, of which £0032 belonged to the previous year. There was over £4000 outstanding rates on Crown property. Mr. Lawson said that the water account revealed a satisfactory position. Rates amounting to £1033, or 45 per cent of the rate struck, had been collected. Arrears amounting to £1039 had been paid. Property belonging to. the Crown had been affected in the outstandings of the account, but a portion of the water rate had been paid on many properties. Mr. Lawson pointed out that at the present time it was impossible to get revenue from all ratepayers, but under recent legislation there would be relief by interest reduction.. There was expected to be a saving of approximately £1500 a year under that heading, but even then the interest burden would be a heavy one and the amount of future expenditure would have to be limited. The interest payments alone amounted to £6002 a year." ,
