ONEHUNGA FINANCES.
ADDRESS BY MR. E. MORTON.
Mr. E. Morton, Mayor of Onehunga, who is again contesting the Mayoralty, addressed a meeting of about of) electors in the Foresters' Theatre last evening. Members of the retiring council were with him on the platform.. Reviewing the work of the council for the last two years, Mr. Morton said the borough was in a better financial position at present than most of the other suburban local bodies. Many improvements had been carried out during his term of office. These included a seawall on the waterfront, the tar sealing of Tawa Road, and the construction of 13 miles of concrete paths. If re-elected he could promise' the electors that there would be no increase in rates this year, and he saw no reason why a further reduction not be made next year. During the "next 18 months practically every footpath in the borough would* be laid in concrete. This' would end an anually recurring and heavy maintenance cost.
, In reply to a question, Mr. Morton said it was estimated that the borough would save approximately £2000 a year on account of interest reduction on loans.
Mr. S. Vella, chairman of the waterworks committee, made reference to the arrangement concluded with the Mount Roskill Road Board for the supply of water to that borough at lOd per 1000 gallons. The. scheme would produce a profit of £2000 a year at a capital outlay of £6000 for reservoir and pumps.
The chairman of the reserve committee, Mr. M. J. Moore, said Onehunga was lower rated than any other borough in the metropolitan area.
The meeting closed with a resolution of thanks and appreciation of the services, of the council.
