NORTHCOTE BOROUGH.

Tho council of the Northcote borough met last night, the Mayor, Mr. R. Martin, presiding.

Road Maintenance.—It was decided to submit an estimate of £893 to the Main Highways Board for cost of upkeep and mending of roads. The board said that subsidies would be considerably curtailed this year. _ Funds would be granted for general maintenance only, but work of a very urgent nature, such as completing the construction of bridges, would be considered. The borough overseer, Mr. E. Mays, said that the council would be lucky if it were granted half of the estimate. • k

Water Supply.—The clerk of the Devonport Borough Council wrote stating that it had decided to make a start with its scheme of purifying Lake Pupuke water for supply to both Devonport and Takapuna. Northcote had not been included in the reticulation scheme, as it had made no move. The council received.the letter. The North Shore Water Board wrote re taking over the pumping plants in the lake basin and assuming control of water supply. Mr. Johnson said the four boroughs could deal with their own water problems more cheaply and efficiently separately than collectively. The Mayor said that he would be the council's representative at the meeting of the board this afternoon.

Football Grounds.—The Northcote and Bin-.enhead Ramblers' Football Club and the Northcote and Birkenhead Rugby Union Football Club wrote for the use of the recreation reserve. It was decided to make an equal allocation of the grounds. Three councillors objected to the equal allocation, as one club was fielding seven: teams and the other only five, but their objections were over-ruled by a majority vote. Mayor Congratulated.—"We congratulate you on your return to office unopposed, and we think that speaks volumes," said the retiring deputy-Mayor, Mr. A. Facer, to the Mayor. > Mr. Martin paid tribute to the five retiring councillors, Messrs. C. H. Johnson, J. Anthony, P. C. .Cross, A. W. Christian and A. Facer, all of whom had given him able assistance. He made special mention of Messrs. Johnson and Christian, the latter of whom was ohairman of the legal and finance committee.
