THE WHEAT SURPLUS.
BOARD STARTS BUYING. A number of farmers -who have lately tried to- sell April wheat, with the penny increment added, have failed to find buyers, and unless they are lucky they will not be able to dispose of their grain for a week or two yet (says the "Christchuich Times"). Only a few millers are at present in need of wheat, and the board does not start its buying of the April surplus till towards the end of the month. Millers have bought heavily of the wheat offered up till now, and several mills are actually in possession of their full year's requirements. "Most of them have ten months' supplies in their stores, and not many have bought this week. The millers have made a splendid effort to carry out their part of the contract as far as this season's wheat is concerned. The board has during the past week been busy buying up the March surplus. It is reported that the prospects for getting rid of the surplus this season look brighter than they did a few months ago, and the board seems to be rather more hopeful. The present difficulty is to defide whether smaller sowings this year will enable a portion of the surplus to be held over till next year profitably. The board has always before it the consideration of the surplus, but no definite move can be made yet.
