PAPAROA HOSPITAL.
SUGGESTED CLOSING DOWN. COUNTY COUNCIL'S PROTEST. (By Telegraph. —Own Correspondent.) PAPAROA, this day. At ,a meeting of the Otamatea County Council yesterday, Mi , . Preston (Ruawai) moved a strong resolution of protest against the proposal of the Health Department to close the Paparoa Hospital. He pointed out that, though the Government in hard times still continued heavy expenditure on education, they were prepared to curtail the services which safeguarded the life and health of the people. Mr. Ramsbottom (Whakapirau) said that formerly he had favoured the closing of the institution, but under the reorganisation of staff it had restored public confidence, and he onlj hoard good reports from patients who held been treated. He now supported its continuance. The chairman, Mr. R. Coates, said he thought a 6trong .fight would be put up against closing the hospital. Mr. Snelling (Maungaturoto) was thfi only member to record his vote against the motion which was carried. The engineer, Mr. R. J. Baff, who has been under three months' leave of absence owing to illness, was granted further leave. The position is to be reviewed from month to month, and the assistant engineer, Mr. Reid, is to carry on the work' in the meantime.
