THE HOLIDAYS.
» AUCKLAND'S BEST WEATHER. WATER EXCURSIONS POPULAR.' Aucklanders were singularly fortunate in the weather for the New Year holidays; it could not have been better. New Year's Day itself was ideal for the outdoor life which is such a distinct feature of the celebrations. As the tide suited ' admirably, both on the Waitemata and the Manukau, the beach habitues were all smiles, and seldom 1 have there been so many people at tae scaoide, air revelling in the perfect bathing. Yesterday there were even largci crowds on the beaches. A feature of the holidays this yea) has been the revived popularity of water exclusions. In the old days excursions to Waiwera, Kawau and, other resort were among the great events of the holiday season, each vessel being packed. Then came the motor car and interest in the water outings declined visibly. Whether the times have necessitated more economy among motorists, or whether water excursions are enjoying a new lease of life, it is difficult to'say, but the boats have not for a very louj,' while been so well patronised as they were yesterday. Some of them were packed from stem to stern, and on one big steamer people were even sitting on top of the bridge house. The races at Kllerslie again attracted thousands, and the number on the course showed an increase over • last year's ligurcs. Rowling, tennis, cricket and other outdoor games were, well patronised, but it is safe, to say that the beaches and the races attracted t!>e majority, of Auckland holiday-makers.: When the weather showed signs of a change last evening manv anxious people thought the last day of the holidays would turn out wet, but the sligiit drizzlo that blew in from the northcast was not the precursor of the usual sort of weather from that quarter, and did not mar the arrangements made for fittingly winding up the holiday season
