IMMIGRATION.
STRICT LIMITATION. MINISTER'S ASSURANCE. I ONLY PERSONS JOINING FAMILIES. (By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.; WELLINGTON, this day. An assurance that a strict limitation was being placed on the number of immigrants to New Zealand was given by the Minister, Mr. Young, in the House last night. He stated that the only persona being brought to New Zealand were those who were joining their families here. No domestics were being brought out. The amount placed on the Estimates for the Immigration Department this year, said Mr. Young, was £14,435, but of that amount the State would recover £8000, leaving the cost to the Government at £6000. During the six months of the year already gone the expense had worked out at about £1500. That meant that about 50 persons had been brought out, the cost for each person being about £30. Mr. W. Nash (Labour, Hutt) • Why bring them out at all? The Minister said only persons who were joining their families in New Zea-i land had been brought out this year. He did not think any reasonable objection could be raised to such a course, or that any obstacle could be placed in the way of the reunion of families. Mr. F. Jones (Labour, Dunedin South): Are any domestics being brought out? The Minister: I can give an absolute assurance that no domestics are coming into this country at all. The Minister told the "Star" correspondent that only 290 immigrants arrived in New Zealand last year, and it was not likely that that number would be reached this year.
