WITH THE AMATEURS. MANUKAU CLUB. FIXTURES. Saturday, October I.—Provincial ROad Championship, 2 p.m.Devonport Sunday, October 'J..— Club Meeting, Domain, Monday, "'October 24.—Opening Papatoetoe Stadium. It was certainly pleasing to the officials of the Manukau Amateur Cycling Club to see so many riders brave the elements last Saturday to compete In the two road events decided over the two miles and a hilf circuit at Avondale South. Continuous rain and a north-easterly wind added to the difficulties of the course, a fairly hilly one, made for hard riding. John Browiu scratch junior, appeared to be little pressed when he came in first and fastest in the ten miles junior race. In the final rush for the line h. L. G. Huehes, scr, although second, ottered Brown no serious opposition. Brown's time was 2851. Brown was second oft 160 in the harbour championship the 'evious W eck, and has every prospect of blossoming into a first-rate road rider. The senior race was the seventh, annual race for the Cotter Cup, which was given tolhe club in 1926 by Mr. E W. Cotter, bow a resident of Christchurch. This race is second only m popularity with the annual "champ," and on Saturday 23 riders rode in the drenching rain. The distance was 15 miles. With the sweets of victory almost in lie grasp, D. J. McAnulty, 6.30 limit, punctured, which was just too bad, for "Mac" had a very useful lead of over half a mile with only five miles to go. It is, however, the uncertainty of road racing which makes it so much more popular with; cyclists than track work. The finish was a splendid one between six riders. J. H. McLachlan, 3.15, timed Ms KDrint to perfection, and swooned up to and past Norb. B. Casey, 2.15, to win br inches. McLachlan's win was very noDular, for it was his first this season. It was really his first brilliant effort, too. In his other starts he has teen most disaMointing. McLachlan rode with marked success as a scratch junior last year, accounting for time on five occasions. H. Vic Gordon (scratch) had a hard ride on his own, but managed to maintain an even bat, to run out the fastest rider in 43m dead.; "Vic"' packed up badly in the club's "champ.'" when he obtained a lift m a car for portion of the later stages, but more attention to his training should put him right, for he has proved on. many occasions he has the necessary qualities of speed and endurance. Les. H, Dwight performed well in the "Round the Gorges" race at Christchurch last Saturday to run Frank Grose to inches for fastest time, 4h 35m 40s. It was Les' first attempt at any distance over 50 miles, so his effort is really outstanding. He holds the {'harbour" course record in 2h 'to 10s.
