SCHOOL TEXT BOOKS.
THAT EXTENDED CONTRACT. REQUEST TO MINISTER. (By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. The first indication of what will probably become a very live subject during the present session was given when the House met yesterday, when Mr. H. S. S. Kyle (Coalition Reform, Riccarton) raised the question of the Education Department's contract with a printing (irm for the supply of school text-books. Mr. Kyle was one of the first on his feet at question time, and he gave notice to ask the Minister of Education, the Hon. R. Masters, M.L.C., whether, in view of the widespread dissatisfaction regarding the extension of the publishing arrangements and the further extension of the use of primary school textbooks, claimed by teachers to be entirely unsuitable in their treatment of various subjects—arithmetic and English in particular—the Minister would lay on the table of the House the file of correspondence between him and the school committees, printers' organisations, and the firm of printers in whose favour the extension had been granted.
