DETERIORATING.
NEW ZEALAND ROADS
RATE OF £200,000 A YEAR,
A statement that the highways of the Dominion were deteriorating at the estimated rate of £200,000 a year was made by Mr. M. H. Wynyard, motorists' representative on the Main Highways Board, at a meeting of the council of the Auckland Automobile Association last evening. Advice was received from the Main Highways Board that it was not in a position to carry out metalling work on the Gisborne-Wairoa, via Hangaroa, main highway. It was absolutely impossible to contemplate any work such as that, or on the Great South Road between Papakura and Mercer, unle&s the board was assured that its finances would not again be diverted, stated Mr. Wynyard. "Our roads are going back," said Mr. A. Grayson, the president. "We want all the money we can get for urgent works." It was decided to -write to the North Island Motor Union requesting it to urge on Cabinet the necessity of leaving the Highways Board's funds intact in future.
