WATER RATES AND TAXIS

PARKING OF MOTOR CARS,

A special meeting of the City Council whs held yesterday afternoon to pass a new by-law, the provisions of -which had already been approved. The by-law (No. 10) is "comprehensive and includes alterations in the list of streets in which parking is prohibited or restricted to ten or twenty minutes in the daytime. A discount' is provided for of Id per 1000 gallons of water supplied to outside focal bodies if paid at regular monthly periods, the charge being 1/3 per 1000 gallons. The new scale of abattoir fees nnd charges, decided at last meeting of the council, is embodied in the by-law.

Taxi cabs are dealt with in a clause providing for the withholding of licenses in the event of colours or colour schemes being deemed to resemble too closely those of other cabs. The following changes in maximum taxi cab fares are made: —Cabs without meters, by time: Up to four passengers, per hour, including return to stand, 12/0 (formerly 16/). Cabs with meters: For the first halfmile, one or two passengers, 1/ (1/8); for every additional passenger for the ■whole or part of the journey, Gel (1/); for every additional half-mile or fraction, irrespective of the number of passengers, (id (every additional quartermile or fraction, sd).

Amendments arc made to the charges for household water supply. Garden hose rates are to be doubled where approved mechanical sprinklers are in use; or the supplies may be motored at the option of the council. The minimum chargo for a motored extraordinary supply is to be a quarter of the water rate payable in respect to the premises. Both provisions are retrospective to April 1. The council hits taken power to meter any supply at present paid for by annual charge and call upon the consumer to pay whichever of the two rates is the higher on a quarterly basis.
