ANOTHER CHANCE.

PROBATION FOR DRIVER. VALUELESS CHEQUE INVOLVED. A charge of the forgery of a cheque having been withdrawn W the police, Edward Henry Leedham Quintal, aged 20, a driver, was charged in the Police Court this morning with obtaining from T. P. Laffey, on May 14, £3 by means of a valueless cheque. Quintal admitted this charge. On May 14, said Detective Sergeant Kelly, Quintal had been drinking in Newmarket hotels. He gave Mr. Laffey a cheque for £20, but this was not cashed. However, Mr. Laffey lent Quintal on it. Quintal spent £1 10/ of this sum on liquor, Quintal signing the cheque. "He has rather a bad list of convictions, most of them being for converting motor cars," added Mr. Kelly. "Unfortunately when he takes too much liquor he commits offences. The arresting detective thinks that if it had not been for liquor Quintal would not have committed this offence. Quintal is a married man and a good worker." While admitting that Quintal had a bad list, the probation officer suggested that he might be given another chance. Liquor was his, trouble, and he should be prohibited. Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., in admitting Quintal to probation for two years and prohibiting him, ordered him to make restitution.
