LOCAL BODIES.

NEW LYNN BOROUGH COUNCIL. An ordinary meeting of the New Lynn Borough Council was held last evei.iug. The Mayor, Mr. Geo. Lawson, presided, and other members present were Messrs. W. Piatt, Geo. Severne, S. James, M. Laing, A. Woollcy and A. Jeffrey. No. 5 Scheme. —In reply to the council's request that the Minister of Public Works should help in the provision of tools for workers under the No. 5 scheme, the Minister said he would be pleased to look into the possibility of meeting the council's request. The Mayor said that registrations were increasing weekly, and the tool question was really a serious one for the council. Waterworks.—The turncock reported that since the general overhaul no defect had been reported. Records were being taken for the purpose of checking extraordinary supplies, and with a view to ascertaining, as far as possible, the consumption per head of population within the borough. Bank Overdraft Interest.—The council resolved to support the Henderson Town Board in its representations to the Government that, in view of the serious difficulties being experienced by various local bodies in connection witli the collection of revenue, the commercial banks be required to reduce the rate of interest charged on advances by way of overdraft to local authorities. New Lynn Boys' Band. —A letter from Mr. Stanley George stated that an inclination had recently been shown to resuscitate the defunct New Lynn Boys' Band. He suggested that an organisation be set up that would be more permanent than hitherto, and that the Borough Council interest itself in the project. It was proposed that all band property be handed over to the council, and that the council annually appoint three of their number to act along with three other persons, to be co-opted, as a band committee, and that the band be know as the New Lynn Municipal Band, and not be necessarily restricted to juveniles. The council considered that the matter should be placed before a public meeting. Water Rates.—The following water rates were struck for the year ending March 31, 1933, and payable on the Bth day of June next:—Ordinary supply: Upon all lands and buildings to which water is supplied (except supplies by meter) a rate of fourpence in the pound on the unimproved ratable value of all such property, with a minimum charge of 10/. Non-consumers: Upon all lands and buildings to which water can be, but is not, supplied, situate within one hundred yards from any part of the waterworks, a rate of one penny in the pound on the unimproved ratable value, with a minimum charge of 5/.
