THEFT AT DAIRY FACTORY.
MAN CAUGHT WITH GOODS
Samuel John Ross, a relief worker, appeared before Mr. F. H. Levien, S.M., at the Otahuhu Police Court, charged with the theft of 61b butter, three fowls and a pair of dungarees, valued at £2 2/6. He pleaded not guilty. Sergeant Rowell said accused was found" near the Tamaki butter factory on April 20 at 8.30 p.m. He told an impossible story. Alexander Baird, manager of the factory, said he heard a noise at the factory's bowser, and as it had been tampered with before, he rushed over and found Ross standing there. He noticed that a batten had been wrenched off above a window of a little store near the factory, also that the window catch had been tampered with. He later found a sugar bag lying beside accused's cycle, containing the fowls, butter and dungarees. After hearing the defence, Mr. Levien said he would have to believe in a number of coincidences and improbabilities if he was to exonerate accused. Ross was sentenced to one month's hard labour.
