MAORI STEALS MONEY.
GIVEN CHANCE BY JUSTICES.

James Herewini, a Maori, aged 20, made his iirst appearance ill the Whangarei Police Court this morning, and was given a chance to make good by the presiding justices, Messrs. C. H. Chissell and F. A. Farmer. Herewini admitted stealing, at Pipiwai, £.5, the property of Hone Pepe. Detective Sergeant Robertson, who prosecuted, said accused had been employed, by Pepc. Recently Pepe went into Whangarei for the day, and Herewini found out where he kept his money. He took £.">, and when Pepe returned made some excuse to go away. He had spent the money, but when questioned by the police had admitted stealing it. The justices ordered accused to come up for sentence if called upon in 12 mouths, and to make restitution of the £5.
