FEWER ON STRIKE.
POSITION IMPROVED. MOUNT ALBERT UNCHANGED. NEW LYNN AND MT. WELLINGTON. Compared with yesterday, the position on relief jobs in the city and suburbs has improved to-day. On works being carried out by the City Council there are 63 per cent more men working, and all are men who were employed previously. At Mount Eden all jobs are going with the full number of men required, but many finished yesterday, having worked their full time for the week. At Takapuna there are four men more working than there were yesterday, but at Mount Albert there is no change, and only a few men are on the jobs. No men are working at New Lynn, and the position is the same at Mount Wellington. POSITION AT DEVONPORT. FOOD DEPOT ESTABLISHED. The announcement made at a meeting of over 100 workers at the Labour Hall, Devonport, last evening, that a central committee, with the Mayor as president, had been formed, was received with applause. It is intended to set up an unemployment board in the borough, at which unemployed men may enrol. Those present at the meeting included several women, and Mr. L. Low presided.
The local delegates to the city conference reported fully concerning the present situation, and unanimity was shown. Mr. G. Creamer, president of the Takapuna Association, addressed the meeting, and it was decided that all nonworkers sign a roll daily in order to show the exact number of men "out." A count of hands showed that 92 men were ready to sign.
The Workers' Welfare Association reported that a well-stocked depot had been operating since Friday at the Labour Hall, and that large donations of meat, potatoes and other vegetables had been received from business people and local residents, while Albany fruitgrowers had given a ton of apples. Medicine and medical attention for unemployed men and their families were available. It was mentioned that the closing down of the relief works for two days at Devonport was at the request of the nonworkers, and not the employed men.
