STORING GELIGNITE.

RELIEF WORKER'S ARREST. NO SINISTER PURPOSE. RIOMANDED FOR SENTENCE. Arrested yesterday on a charge of being found without lawful excuse in possession of explosives, four plugs of gelignite, two detonators and a piece of fuse, Pcreival Herbert William Greenaway, aged 20, was brought before the Police Court to-day. He pleaded guilty. Detective Sergeant Kelly said that Detectives Sneddon and Mills found the explosives under accused's house. Asked to explain where he got the explosives, accused said that while he was a relief worker about four months ago, he was carrying the gelignite, etc. He thought to himself that it might eomc in handy, and took it home. "There is no suggestion that he was going to use it for any violence," added Mr. Kellv.

"As Mr. Kelly has fairly stated, the gelignite was not got for* any sinister purpose," said counsel. "Greeiiaway got it over four months ago for the purpose of blowing up a. tree, but did not use it. He left it under liis house and never thought any more about it. Grcenaway is a relief worker, and went on working the other day when other men struck."

Mr. Hunt: How do I know that he got it to blow up a tree ? Here we are with riots and acts of violence in the town, and a man is found harbouring enough gelignite to blow up big- buildings. Anyone caught with explosives could easily say they wanted to blow up a tree." "I don't know where the police got their information from," said the solicitor. Detective Sergeant Kelly: No, and you won't either. (Laughter.) Greenaway was remanded for sentence until next Wednesday.
