The Whangarei County Council received intimation from the Highways Board to-day that if the proposal to divert £500,000 from the highways fund at present before Parliament is adopted, it is quite definite that no funds will bo available for construction and surfacing on the Maungatapere-Whangarei highway. Work has commenced on the road, but if the Government subsidy is withdrawn it will be held up again.
