NORTHCOTE HIGH SCHOOL.

» INCREASED ATTENDANCE. NEW BUILDING NEEDED. The Northcote District High School reopened yesterday with a roll number of 401, an increase of 88 on the previous year. The pupils enrolled in the high school, numbered 116, and in the junior high school 285, an increase of 44 in each department. Some 60 children attended from Birkdale and 57 from Glenfield and Albany. These numbers will probably be augmented during the week. The chairman, Mr. H. Shaw, said at the meeting of the school committee last evening that the class rooms were filled and the staff were at their wits' end to provide accommodation. The music room had been converted into a class room and the new commercial form was now full with 40 pupils, for whom the present supply of typewriters was quite inadequate. It was decided to renew the application for the erection of a new building for the high school. The Education Board intimated that the conveyance of children during the ensuing year would be undertaken by the Marine Suburbs Company from Albany and Glenfield, and by the Birkenhead Transport Company from Birkdale. On the suggestion of Mr. J. Mac Donald it was decided to forward as a remit to the Primary Schools Committees' Association a recommendation to the effect that 50 per cent of the school inspectors should be comprised of women.
