THIEF THWARTED.
ATTEMPT TO STEAL CAR. SHOP FRONT "WRECKED. YOUNG MAN ESCAPES. A motor car was removed without authority from its parking place at Wellesley Street West, a short distance above Elliott Street, last evening, but the thief, probably through an inadequate knowledge of the controls, let the car backward into the front of a shop in the T. and G. Building. The plate-glass window was completely shattered and also the marble facings. The metal framework was pushed back about three feet, and the contents of the window, bottles of jams, and preserves, were smashed and scattered in all directions. The car, a sedan owned by Mr. A. F. Cantwell, was damaged, but the owner philosophically said later that he could consider himself fortunate that the accident occurred —a damaged car was better than no car. At the time of the smash Mr. Cantwell was in his business premises across the road from the damaged shop. He rushed out and learned from eye-witnesses that a young man had jumped out of the car and darted away.
