WAR ON GUNMEN.
ARMED BANDITS OF LONDON. LONDON, January IG. Bandits here are showing an increasing disposition to carry, and use revolvers, but Lord Trenchard, the new Chief Commissioner of Police, has declared war on the gun 111 en, and judges are passing salutary sentences 011 criminals caught in possession of firearms. Few of them have even dared to carry weapons for purposes of intimidation, for they know that if they are caught, their sentences will be heavily increased. Latterly, however, there has been a disquieting growth of armed banditry. "Armed criminals are becoming more numerous," said Mr. Justice McCardie, in charging the grand jury at Leeds Assizes; and Mr. Justice Humphreys, in sentencing to 15 years' imprisonment a gunman who had attempted to murder a constable at Thames Ditton, declared that the law would have to be administered fearlessly if the police were to be protected against murderous attacks.
