AUCKLAND TITLES.
Opening of Tournament.— Junior Classes Disappointing.
The Stanley Street courts were* in perfect condition this morning for the opening of the Auckland LaWn Tennis Association's provincial championships. Good entries w~re received for all events with the exception of the junior competitions, which were considered to .be disappointing in view of the amount of coaching this class of player hals had during the year. The weather was sultry when play started.
Following is the number of players in each grade: Men's A grade singles, 32; B grade singles, 32; ladies' singles, 16; men's doubles, 50; ladies' doubles, 22; combined doubles, 42; boys' -junior doubles, 24; boys' junior singles, 28; girls', junior doubles, 14; girls' junior singles, 15; junior combined doubles, 16. As a result of the morning's play the fourth round of the men's A grade singles, men's B grade singles and ladies' singles were completed. The outstanding feature of the roorning's play was the defeat of a "seeded"' player, J. C. Charters, of Pukekohe, by J. T. Harrison, of Royal .Oak Results:— MEN'S SINGLES.—A GRADE. First Round.—C.
