TOMATOES FROM THE ISLANDS.

FRUIT FROM CALIFORNIA,

Fair supplies of fruit are coming into the markets at present, but the demand is not keen. Apples and peazs have a slow sale, and the figure for the latter fruit has eased, owing to a falling off in quality.

Local lemons and poorman oranges are dull of sale, but there is a fair inquiry for hothouse tomatoes at prices quoted. Some tomatoes from the Islands arrived ex Wellington; and were sold from 8/ to 8/6 a case.

For the cargo of citrus fruit which arrived from Sydney this week there was only c;n average market. Some Californian plums and apricots have come to hand via Wellington. They were sold below landed cost. The exact figures were:— Apricots, 16/ to 20/ case; plums, 15/ to 18/ case. Market values for other fruit are:— Apples: Delicious, ex cooler, 4/6 to 6/6 case; ex orchard, 2/6 to 3/6; Munroes, 4/6 to 6/6; Ballarats, 5/6 to 6/9; Jonathans, 5/6 to 7/; Grannie Smith, 6/ to 8/; Sturmers, 5/ to 8/; Brightons, 3/ to 5/6; Dougherty, 3/ to 5/. Pears: Nelis and Coles, large 8/6 to 9/6, small 5/ to 7/; P. Barrys, 6/ to 8/. Tree tomatoes: 3/ to 5/; Black, 5/ to 6/. Lemons: 5/ to 9/. Tomatoes: Outdoor, 3d to 6d lb. Passions: 2/ to 4/6 case. Grapes: Colman, 1/ to 2/2 lb; Sydney white, 14/ to 15/ case; Coleman, extra choice, up to 3/ lb. Cape gooseberries: 4%d to 5d lb. Oranges: Island, according to count, 11/ to 15/ case; Australian Navels, 9/ to 13/. Mandarins: 8/ to 10/6. Bananas: No. l's, 20/ to 24/ case; seconds and mediums, 12/ to 20/. Pines: 10/ to 12/. Cabbage Not So Plentiful. The recent cold snap has shortened supplies of cabbage and cauliflower to some extent, but dealers state that it only wants a couple of days of warm rain, and the markets would be crowded again with the latter vegetable. Celery is very plentiful, and is of good auality. Latest prices are:— Potatoes, Southern, 9/ to 10/6 sack; onions, Australian, 10/ cwt; local, 12/ to 14/ cwt; kumaras, local, 6/ to 8/ Dag; Tauranga, 12/ to 15/ cwt; cabbage, 4/ to 10/6 sack; cauliflower, 4/ to 10/6 sack; swedes, 1/ to 2/ bag; pumpkins, 5/ to 10/ cwt; citron melons, if sound, 8/ to 10/ cwt; beans, 9d to 1/3 lb; lettuce, 2/ to 8/ case; vegetable marrows, 2/ to 3/ dozen; cabbage, loose, 2/ to 4/6 dozen; cauliflower, loose, 2/ to 8/ dozen; celery, 1/ to 3/6 bundle; rhubarb, 2/6 to 4/6 dozen; spinach, 9d to 1/3 dozen; pumpkins, loose, 6d to 2/6 each; radish, 6d dozen; spring onions, 6d to 1/ bundle; carrots, parsnips, beet and turnips, 6d to lOd dozen; leeks, 4d to 9d bundle; chokos, 1/ to 2/ dozen. Eggs antr Butter. Supplies of eggs are _on the increase, wlyle the demand remains about the. same. The wholesale selling net cash price for both hen and duck eggs are:—Special grade, l/lO 1 dozen; A grade, 1/BV6; B grade, 1/6%.

Farmers' butter is selling well from lid to 1/1 a lb. Poultry. At to-day's auctions the supply of poultry was medium, and the demand was keen. The prices paid showed a slight rise. Selling rates were as follow:— Cockercls: Heavy breeds, prime 3/9 to 5/3, not prime 2/6 up; light breeds, .prime 2/3 to 3/3, not prime 1/6 up. Fat roosters: Heavy breeds, prime, 2/ to 3/; light breeds, 1/6 to 2/. Fat hens: Heavy breeds, 2/9 to 3/9; light breeds, 2/ to 2/9. Laying hens: Heavy breeds, 3/ to 4/6; light breeds, 3/ to 5/. Pullets: Heavy breeds, best 3/0 to 8/, smaller 3/ up; light breeds, best 4/ to 7/6, smaller 2/6 up. Drakes: Young, prime 3/ to 4/6, smaller 2/ up; old, 2/ to 3/. Ducks: Young, 3/6 to 4/6; old, 2/6 to 3/9. PRICES IN WELLINGTON. Messrs. Laery and Co., Ltd., Wellington, report present values as follows: — Cucumbers: Choice, hothouse, 10/ to 15/; others, 7/ to 9/ dozen. Grapes: Choice, hothouse, 2/ to 2/3; others, 1/8 to 1/10 lb. Tomatoes: Choice, houthouse, 9d to 1/; others, 6d to 8d lb. French beans: Choice, hothouse, 1/9 to 2/3; others, 1/6 to 1/8 lb. Passions: Choice. 6/ to 7/; others, 4/6 to 5/6 half case. Cape gooseberries: Choice, dry, 5/6 to 6/ half case. Lemons: Choice, cured, 12/ to 15/; others, 8/ to 10/ bushel. Cauliflowers: Choice, 10/ to 14/ sack. Cabbage: Choice, 8/ to 10/ sack. Celery: Choice, 9/ to 12/ banana case. Kumaras: Choice, 12/ to 14/ sugar 'bag; 18/ to 20/ banana case. Spinach: Choice, 7/ to 8/ banana case. Lettuce: Choice, 8/ to 10/ banana case. Sprouts: Choice, 187 to 20/ banana case. Poorman oranges: Choice, large, 9/ and 7/ bushel.
