HIGH OFFICIALS.
RUMOURED ORGANISATION. CIVIL SERVICE ECONOMIES. "NOT A PERMANENT BODY." (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, this day. It has been reported that during the period when the Government's salary reduction proposals were before Parliament a number of high officials of the Public Service formed an organisation to conserve their own interests. Inquiry shows that this i 9 not strictly correct, but that a number of responsible officers were in consultation on the subject of retrenchment and salary economies, not for the purpose of protecting their own emoluments. Their advice was required by the Government, and they gave assistance in the examination of alternative proposals to show their effect on the general body of public servants.
Impartial r.dvice was tendered the Prime Minister on the whole subject, and although the work required a certain amount of organisation it is not regarded as a permanent body and is not in conflict with existing Public Service organisations, of which some of the officiate concerned are members.
