ONEHUNGA COUNCIL.

The Onehunga Borough Council met last night, Mr. E. Morton, the Mayor, presiding. Financial Report.—The town clerk presented a financial report on expenditure in various departments to February 28. Streets maintenance cost £7307 (estimated for year, £7295); waterworks, £3362 (£3600); Hillsboro , cemetery, £972 (£1230); Waikaraka cemetery, £313 (£375); and reserves, £891 (£1000). The report was adopted.

Water Supply.—The Ellerslie Town Board wrote agreeing to sign an agreement for 21 years to take water from the council at 10d per 1000 gallons.

Water Mains.—The chairmen of the streets and waterworks committees were authorised to have the 4in water main in Arthur Street East removed and laid in the footpath on the north side, with another pipe laid on the south side.

Railway Reserve.—The Hon. Mr. Veitch, Minister of Railways, advised the council that he had agreed to reduce the rental of a railway reserve at Te Papapa from £5 to £1 per annum, if used by the council as the site of a rest room. The offer was accepted.

Demand for Rates.—The State Advances Office has disclaimed liability for the payment of rates on properties mortgaged to it. The council decided to ask Mr. W. J. Jordan, M.P., to assist it to have the Act amended to protect local bodies in collecting their rates.

Auckland Museum. — The council's annual levy for the maintenance of the Auckland War Memorial Museum is £26fi 12/4. The council will nominate a member at the next meeting for election to the management of the Institute, to represent local bodies.

Foreman's Report.—The foreman of works reported that during the fortnight ending March 12 the whole of the permanent employees had been engaged in supervision of the gangs engaged in works under No. 5 scheme. The whole of the transport had also been employed continuously on the same scheme, with two hired trucks.

Earthquake Relief Fund.—The Mayor stated that the sum of £568 had been subscribed. It was decided to send £150 worth of blankets and £100 in cash to HastingSj and the balance to Napier.
