SLACKNESS OF INDUSTRY
MEETING OF THE BOARD
A meeting of the Kauri Gum Control Board was, held last week, Mr. M. H. Wynyard presiding..Messrs. E. McDougall and E. J. Bellinghaiu took then , seats on the board, Mr. Bellinghani being thu newly elected member for the southern district.
Six applications received from the Lands Department for the upliftment of reservation over portions of Kauri Gum Reserves were referred to the producer*' members for inspection and report. Six applications for kauri gum buyers' licenses were granted. Dr. Hosking, of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Wellington, who is making investigation into the possible developments of the industry and the improvement of processes for the treatment of gum, conferred with the board in respect of various points, and will report to the Department. A table showing the returns of gum entered for export was received from the Customs Department end was submitted to flic meeting as an indication of the slackness of the gum market. During the month of January, 1931, 97 tons o? gum, to a total value of £4025 yvere exported to Britain, Australia, France, Germany, the United States, Belgium and Sweden. The position improved somewhat in February when 175 tons, valued at £7343, were exported. '
