"THE CINDERELLA."
POULTRY FARMERS' PLAINT. COMPULSORY REGISTRATION. LEGISLATION ADVOCATED. Delegates to the Poultry Association conference spent practically the whole of the morning's session in a discussion on a remit from Wellington which urged on the association the necessity for the compulsory registration of poultry keepers, every person selling eggs to pay an annual registration fee, to be based on a sliding scale. At the outset the chairman, Mr. G. S. Bates, stated the Government had declared that a poultry census could not be taken in conjunction with the agricultural statistics. Mr. J. H. McLean (Wellington) said poultry fanning had been the Cinderella of primary industries. They had always "got it in the neck" and had been exploited. Voluntary organisation of the industry was out of the question. Legislation was a necessity. He outlined a comprehensive scheme which he claimed would place the poultry industry in a good position. He was still explaining his proposals, when the luncheon adjournment was taken.
