FEWER POLITICIANS.
SAVING IN EXPENDITURE. PROPOSAL TO BUSINESS MEN. A reduction in the number of members of the Legislature, as a means of securing Government economy, was suggested to the Auckland Chamber of Commerce this morning in a letter received from Mr. It. L. Ziman. Mr. Ziman suggested that the Legislative Council would function as well, if not better, if its 40 members were reduced to 20. This could be achieved within a few years. In the House of Representatives there were 76 European members, the number having been fixed in 1900. Since then communication had improved to such an extent that it seemed reasonable that the number of European representatives could be reduced' to 38. He suggested that that could be achieved by the. next election, and each succeeding election before a census was taken, being conducted on the basis'that each member be elected to represent an area combining two of the electorates. After a census was taken readjustments of boundaries could be made.
The communication was passed on to the Associated Chambers of Commerce.
