KAURI ABLAZE.
GREAT FOREST FIRE. FLAMES DRIVEN BY GALE. MILLION feet of timber MENACED. AUCKLAND ASKED FOR HELP. (By Telegraph.—Special to " Star.") KOHUKOHU, this day. Tic great Omahuta kauri forest is on fire. During the past week fires have been prevalent in the vicinity, and favoured by fine weather and winds they drew closer to the kauri forest. A heavy gale sprang up last night, and this morning carried the fire into the standing trees.
Great volumes of smoke are plainly to be seen from Ivohukohu. Reports at 11 a.m. from the vicinity stated that it would be impossible, unless rain fell, to prevent the destruction of a million feet of timber. At present there is no indication of rain. Officials are engaging men from all over the district to fight the fire and save the magnificent trees, which form the largest kauri forest in the Far North. With the gale blowing the fire is likely to spread for miles. The State Forestry Service at Auckland has been asked for assistance. Over 70 men are fighting the flames, but their efforts so far are fruitless.
