HIKURANGI COALMINE.

SALVAGING OPERATIONS.

WORK ALMOST COMPLETE. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WHANGAREI, tliis day. The salvaging of. the Hikurangi Coal Company's colliery, where the pumps have been at work since the second flooding, which occurred last July, is now almost complete. The water has been lowered to a depth of 14ft from the surface, and it is now possible to go down the shaft to recover the submerged motors. These will be dried, and used to reinforce the present pumping machinery in draining the remaining sft from the bottom. If all goes well, the mine will be providing its own boiler coal within a week, and working at full capacity in three weeks. About 35 men have been engaged in dewatering operations, and when the mine resumes it is expected that 150 will be employed. *
