CONFESSION TO POLICE. CHARGE OF ARSON FOLLOWS. ■ (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. Because 'lie could see nothing but bankruptcy ahead, William Pole, a storekeeper, aged 35, set fire to his store and dwelling at Darfield. This he admitted before a magistrate to-day, when pleading guilty to a charge of arson. He was committed for sentence, bail being allowed in two sureties of £100 and in his own recognisances of £100. The police said that the building was really owned by Mr. Donald Gillanders and the accused was the tenant. Accused had financial difficulties and could not make a success of his business.
