UNSETTLED WEATHER.
HOLIDAY ENDING SPOILT
SHOPS AND OFFICES REOPEN.
The day that was for many the la3t of the holidays was spoilt by heavy rain yesterday. Sporting fixtures were either postponed until to-day or abandoned in an unfinished stage. The cricket match between Auckland and North Auckland at Eden Park was cancelled after one over had been bowled, and the matches, in progress in the tennis tournament were adjourned until this morning. A similar course had to be followed regarding the bowling. There was a return to finer conditions this morning, with prospects of the various contests being concluded. Shops, offices, and banks reopened to-day, but the statutory half-holiday was observed, giving city workers a slight respite before settling down again to the work of the year. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WHANGAREI, this day. . The Wliangarei district received a welcome drenching yesterday afternoon and evening, though, so far as dairymen and pastoralists are concerned, the rain which fell was not enough.. A total of .72in of rain was recorded for the 24 hours ended 9 a.m. to-day.
