OLD VAGRANT CHARGED
SENT TO GAOE FOR A YEAR.
An old vagrant with a list,/ Jeremiah O'Keilly, described . as.. a . seaman,' aged 62, appeared before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., in the Police .Court this morning, charged with being a rogue and vagabond with insufficient means of support, having previously been convicted on an idle and disorderly charge. He pleaded; guilty, and was sent to gaol for twelve months. < "This old fellow has lost one leg, , ' said Chief Detective Hammond. "He drinks v heavily. We can't keep him in any ' institution. He is . an habitual cadger round the town, and every time a constable sees him he is told to get on his way. Now he has taken to going round the suburbs and cadging from door to 'door. He frightens the women. One woman asked him inside and gave him a cup of tea, and then he cadged money for beer. He drinks every shilling he gets.". Captain Holmes, of the Salvation Army, was not prepared to look after accused. "There is only one thing to dp, said the magistrate. ?Tut him out of the way for a long time. Twelve months.
