NINE YEARS BANKRUPT.
JUDGE GRANTS DISCHARGE.
LONG "PROBATION" ENDED
A man who had been an undischarged bankrupt for nine years was granted his discharge by Mr. Justice Reed in the Supreme Court to-day. He was Alle'n James Tliorburn, formerly of Opotiki, and now a butcher's assistant, of Wliakatane. . His counsel, Mr. Fleming, referred to him as a man who had undergone a long probation, and-was-more to -be pitied than blamed. Tliorburn's misfortunes began in the slump of 1921, said. jV£j\ Fleming. Although.the reason for the bankruptcy was 'not known, on account of the loss of the filed documents, it appeared that the . explanation . was the post-war collapse in the value of properties. Bankrupt's liabilities totalled about £500, which, for a land agent, was not excessive, Mr. Fleming submitted. Counsel added that when a man was made bankrupt, especially in the country, his faults were often magnified by indignant creditors. Tlie Official Assignee, Mr. A. W. Watters, said no creditors had been moving recently to.oppose the discharge, and the motion was accordingly granted.
