A special squad of police lias been detailed to suppress Sunday trading in Auckland, according to the statement of Sub-Inspector Shanahan in tlie Police Court this morning. Fourteen. more charges of selling goods and exposing goods for sale were brought before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., and various fines were imposed. "I've liad enough complaints about tliis .Sunday trading," said the magis- ■ . ■■ "We have had to detail a special squad," said Mr. Shananan, "and that is why I am asking for a substantial penalty. It is practically an 'open slather' in, Auckland, and these people sell anything at all." Three charges of aiding -and abetting in the sale of goods on Sunday were brought against Frank Massey,. H. L. Kelly and Henry Merizies. They were convicted and discharged. When Massey was charged, a constable, said that he saw defendant come out , of a shop in Park Road with oranges. He said that he was taking them to a patient in the hospital. "If the- police' are going to bring charges of aiding and abetting I will have to fine those concerned," said the magistrate. "That, will probably stop people buying goods on Sundays." Fol- selling goods on Sunday, the following were fined and ordered to pay costs': —Elizabeth W. Marriott £2, Annie Tew £5, William Wason £3, Hannah Dixon £2, John Daniel McKenzie 10/. Fines and orders to pay costs for exposing goods for sale were made in the following cases:—Ethel Grant £2, Nina Hadrup £1, Irene Towers £1, William Wason pay costs, Hannah Dixon pay costs, John Daniel McKenzie pay costs.
