Proposals for «i, direct traffie .route' from Oriehunga throii|li JMangefe' .to Pgpatoetoo were explainecl to theOno-hunga-Mahiikau Clia,mber of .'Comniercc la«t night by Mri S..J: E. Cldsey, there was a drawback in linking, through to' Mangere Ea,st and Papatoetoe from the i Oilehunga i- tram, terminus, ■ on ; account pf the>numerous riglitraiigled cpriiers,i-and the creation of; an ar.terial highway appeared to be the only, solution. • A-featui-e that appealed, to the Welfai'e League-Jwas the possibility of creating rifew; arterial routes Wldcli would linkup the Avholc of the eolith-- euburbaii: area;.' , and -give v -.direct' access with-Otahuhu and Mount Wellington from the Mangere district. The league felt that there was a great and. growing traffic; by ?oad from Auckland, to tithe southern, "stibiirbs and proviuciaL areas at. present using the Great South Road through Penrose and Otahuhu.
Mr. Closey suggested that it would not bo -wise to fix the route definitely at present, and in reply to a question he said that a more direct._ trunk'■■.route through Mangere would probably , shorten the distance by a mile. ! _-- /.
A motion w.iis carried expressing general support 6f the scheme, and. it was referred to the council of the , chamber to. report later. /■"■,;■.,. •.. '. :< .•', A. feature, of the proposal, isthe possij bility.of' establishing- small rural 'settlemerits" along 'the - route, which would be eminently, suitable, for. those , who ~ are engaged in seasonal 1 occupiitioris in "the adjacent industrial areas. ~ ; ' ■
