DIVED INTO RIVER.

GISBORNE, Monday,

After falling ti-ons the railway bridge across the Turanganui River, a boy named: Cook was rescued in quick time by Mr. W. Oakden, secretary of the Gisborhe Returned Soldiers' Association, whose office is adjacent to the tOwn approach to the bridge, and who dived into the river fully clothed.

The lad was observed crossing the bridge pushing his cycle, and when well out over the deep water he lost his balance and fell with his machine. His crie3 attracted the attention of Mr. Oakden, who dived in and brought the boy to the piles of the old wharf, where both were helped to dry ground by men who had also seen the accident.

Those who saw the accident are warm in their praise of Mr. Oakden's presence of mind and decisive action, which was not without considerable risk to himself.
