• CONDITION OF NORTHERN ROADS.

The new season's hotel and camping ground booklet has just been published. r . Members ire advised to avail themselves of a copy as every year. fresh • hdtels are admitted, wlule others are struck off, ?.nd in many cases tariffs Ijave been altered. Another addition this year is the number of guests A.A.A. hotels can accommodate. The half- . days observed in the various -towns in ;thfc ; North Island are set out*, and it is also stated whether cr not the hotels have garage accommodation, what the charge is,' if any, and if yard room is available. The booklet has entailed ex"working up and is supplied frie. to all financial members of the as»ciation. . Members who. anticipate a camping . tour this season, will ciijoy. still further cemfdrt, as many fine camping grounds hivi been added to last year's list. Also, many local authorities have taken a gfeatpr interest in catsring f6r the motorists and have had installed gas rings, electric points, etc., . which will o* available at a reasonable charge. 'With-the exception of some of the North Auckland roads the majority of rtmtes in the province have been impioved since the last touring season. A •number of roads have been widened or reformed, bad corners have been eliminand clay stretches metalled. • ( Until the recent wet weather the clay portions in the main highway nortn "-"Wre, starting to harden and- a week'bfin® weather will probably permit - motorists to cover the roads without the use of chains. After the first dry one of the association's officers will travel over the clay roads, and the ■fouring department" will then be in a position to advise motorists accurately Mto the condition of the roads. At present, motorists are advised to rail their cars from Helensville or Kaipara Flats to Maungatumto. The service officer has just returned after a short i trip to the Matakana district, where roads have been inspected and data secured for sign-posting work. . In-view of the condition of clay roads , generally .touring members are at present.advised to seek the latest information before setting out. _ Further headlight testing will be carried out by A.A.A. patrols in the near ; flture. It should prove of considerable value to the motorist able to engage only half-day and day tours. A wide selection of both popular and little known resorts is given, the mileages and nature of the roads being indicated. The information contained in the booklet and also the reference map which goes with it as a supplement, have been compiled by the association's touring officers.
