TASMANIA'S THOUSAND.

~ XAinTCESTON CUP. WON BY THE ADMIRAL. Exchanges to hand show that the Launceston Trotting Cup, decided on Easter Saturday, was won by The Admiral, who was sent across from Victoria to contest the race. The amount given was £1000, of which £300 was divided between the placed horses in the two heats. Of the remaining £700 the winner received £500 (in addition to the cup valued at £25), the second horse £100, third £50, and fourth £25. ; The first five horses in each heat started in the final. By "winning her heat at a 2.20 gait for the twelve furlongs, Diana Wood (24yds) established a winning record .for Northern Tasmania. Walla Walla (60vds) put up a jrreat performance by running the winner to a head, and recorded a rate of just over 2.18. Allan Mauritius (limit) finished third, and the three placed horses therefore credited the mainland with the honours of the first heat. The Admiral, a brilliant Victorian stallion, off 36yds, defeated Nimble Direct (24yds) and Marjorie (12yds) in the second heat. Again the three- placed horses were mainland representatives. In this heat Direct Home, the back-markc of the race, off 108 yds, finished fifth, and qualified for the final. The final was a magnificent race, and resulted in The Admiral defeating Walla Walla (last year's winner) by a yard, with Diana Wood a similar distance away, third. Nimble Direct was fourtu. Direct Home did not perform at all well in the final .It would have been exceedingly difficult to bring a more representative field together (says one writer). The Admiral has proved himself a sterling performer in Victoria, and now holds the record for this race by recording a rate of under 2.20. Last year Walla Walla (Globe Derby—Princess Winona) reduced th<+ previous record to 3.32! —a rate of 2.20J to the mile. Both The Admiral and Diana Wood are by the defunct Admiral Wood—a great racehorse, whose early demise as a sire is much to be regretted. Diana Wood, it will be remembered easilv accounted for the last Richmond (Vie ) Thousand, whilst Walla Walla, m addition to his 1329 Tasmanian Thousand. was also successful in Queensland s big event last year. Nimble Direct, the fourth horse, is by Directwav, included in his many victories is a £000 event at Richmond (Vic.-)-
