BACKBLOCKS ROADS.

WHOSE RESPONSIBILITY? SUGGESTION BY MINISTER. HIGHWAYS BOARD CONTROL. (By Telegraph.—Special to. " Star.") RUSSELL, this day. When speaking to a deputation at Kaeo to-day the Minister of Lands, the Hon. G. W. Forbes, referred to the question of the heavy maintenance cost of backblocks roads. He said this had been the concern of the Minister of Fublio Works for some time. Personally, he had come to the conclusion that the time had arrived when maintenance costs should become part of the Highway Board's jurisdiction. Men out back should be given every facility to get their produce to markets. "I am entirely in sympathy with the policy to do the very best to improve the roads in the baekbloeks," he added. "As Minister of Lands I am much concerned with the welfare of men going on blocks of land out back. We want to see our waste lands settled, and we also want to see as much laud opened up as possible." In proposing a hearty vote of thanks to the Minister, Mr. H. Lane, chairman of the. Whangaroa County Council, said the people of the North had had more attention from the present Government during the last few months than for years during the late Government's term of office. (Applause.)
