MEN WHO TAKE CARS.
"THEY ARE ALL YOUNG." MAKING IT EXPENSIVE. "This young man took the lock oft' the garage door and, going inside, got a motor ear and drove it to the seaside, ,, said Chief Detective Hammond about Alan McPherson Lee, who appeared on summons at the Police Court to-day, before Mr. Wyvern Wilson, on a charge of unlawfully converting to his own use a motor car valued at £140, belonging to Heather Sutherland. "The car, which was replaced in the garage, was damaged," added Mr. Hammond. "The dicky seat was out of alignment and the mudguard was damaged to the extent of £5, which the insurance company had to pay." Mr. L. Adams, who appeared for Lee, said the motor car was garaged on his father's property. "He never realised the seriousness of his act at the time, but he does so now," said counsel. "He is only young, and I would ask your Worship to deal with him leniently. 1 would also as"< you to make an order for the suppression of his name." "They are all young men who take cars these days," said the magistrate. "Why should he have his name suppressed ?"
Counsel said Lee was the son of respectable parents, and had never been in any trouble previously. He had been well brought up, and when he took the car he never realised what he was doing.
"The only way to deal with cases like this is to make* it expensive for these young anen so they won't dabble in it again. If this young man has been well brought up that fact only increases his responsibility. If a young man had not had such a good bringing wp, he is the one entitled to consideration."
Lee was tined £10, and was ordered to pay the line at the rate of 10/ per week.
